The men’s soccer team played host to the Penn State Harrisburg Lions at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The game was scoreless up until the Spartans gave up a late goal. The Spartans were unable to capitalize on a number of their scoring opportunities and fell to the Lions 1-0.
The lone goal of the game came in minute 84 when the Lion’s player Victor Weaver settled a cross from teammate Creasy Lopez in the box and was able to put the Lions on the scoreboard. That would be the Lion’s only shot on goal in the second half.
The Spartans had many chances to score but could not find the back of the net. Their first chance came in minute 21 when freshman forward Keith Witherell struck a header that hit off of the post. York’s best chance came in minute 52 when senior forward Matt Freibaum had a one-on-one with the Lion’s keeper, Brandon Hoover, but his shot was saved. Freibaum had another chance just minutes later as he took a pass in front of the net, but once again Hoover made the save. York had one last chance to score in minute 86 when junior forward Joel Teston received a cross in the box, but his header skimmed off of the crossbar.
The Spartans fall to 4-6-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play. York College’s men’s soccer team will compete at 3:30 p.m. today at Mary Washington.
