The women’s soccer team snapped a 7 game winless streak as they earned a 1-0 victory over the visiting Marymount (VA.) Saints. The only goal of the game came 15 minutes into the game when sophomore Alyssa Rankin capitalized on a missed shot for her first goal of the season. Steady rain throughout the game limited both offenses.
At the 24-minute mark the Saints had their best opportunity to tie the score when they were awarded a penalty kick after a missed tackle in the box. Chloe McAuliffe took the kick for the Saints, but Spartan freshman goalie Brittany Cullison saved the shot and kept the Saints off the bored. That would be the only shot for the Saints in the first half as they were outshot 11-1. The biggest play of the second half came in the eleventh minute when the Saints had a free kick from 20 yards out. Courtney Stephens hit a rocket to the upper right corner, but Cullison got just enough of her hand on it to deflect it wide of the goal. The Spartans would out shoot the Saints 17-2, seven of them being on goal.
With the goal Saturday, the Spartans gained a key conference win and broke a 256-minute scoreless streak. This was York’s third shutout victory of the year; all three victories have been results of this.
York now improves their record to 3-6-1. The Spartans will compete against Penn State Harrisburg at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5.
