To Write Love On Her Arms is a national nonprofit organization based in Florida. TWLOHA is dedicated to promoting hope and providing resources for people dealing with depression, substance abuse, self-harm and thoughts of suicide.

“As a UChapter on a college campus, it is essential to spread awareness about these topics while everyone is still finding themselves,” president Heather Outwater said of the club’s mission.

The York College UChapter was founded four years ago and continues to flourish with new members every semester. TWLOHA is determined to offer a safe and honest space during their weekly meetings for anyone who wants to join in on an honest discussion, free of judgement. “One of the stigmas around mental illness and self-injury is that no one wants to talk about it. It’s taboo. That is why we hold meetings and certain events throughout the year,” Outwater said.

However taboo it may be, self-injury effects around 20 percent of young adults, according to a report released by Cornell University.

Some events promoted by the club include raising awareness for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week in the winter and National Suicide Prevention Week in the fall. “We serve as a friendly reminder that you are not alone with what you are dealing with, and it is okay to talk about it,” Outwater said.

The club meets every Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in McDougal Lounge, located near Spart’s Den.
